Burton Commits to Legislation in 2014
Minister Burton: "I intend to publish the Gender Recognition Bill in 2014."
Speaking in the Dáil before the Christmas break Minister Joan Burton announced her intention to publish the Gender Recognition Bill in 2014. Minister Burton's comments came in response to a question posed by Lucinda Creighton as to the number of bills published by the Department of Social Protection since her appointment.
"TENI welcomes the Ministers commitment to introducing gender recognition legislation in 2014. We are optimistic that this legislation will reflect the rich discussions that took place at the Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection in October. This is an opportunity for Ireland to become a leader in Europe in the area of trans right by legislating for the lived realities of trans people and by protecting the rights, dignity and privacy of our community," said TENI Chief Executive Broden Giambrone.
Ireland's lack of legislation in this area was found to be incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights following Dr Lydia Foy's landmark case in 2007.
"It is vital that legislation is introduced this year," said TENI Chair Sara R. Phillips. "Dr Lydia Foy and the trans community have been waiting a long time to be legally recognised. This legislation
will be significant in combatting the discrimination and marginalisation that our community faces."
