Social Protection
Motion 15 )
Motion passed unanimously.
Conference welcomes the publication of the General Scheme of the Gender Recognition Bill 2013.
Conference recognises the proposed bill is a marked improvement on the terms of the Gender Recognition Advisory Group (GRAG) report.
Conference acknowledges the careful framing of this legislation is the result of much hard work on the part of the Minister for Social Protection and her staff.
Conference applauds the decision to remove the requirement for Transgendered individuals to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder to access their rights.
Conference calls on the Minister for Social Protection:
To make the role of transgender individuals central to the process rather than that of the primary treating physician;
To address the legal lacuna concerning transgender individuals who wish to transition under the age of eighteen; and
To remove the prohibition on individuals who have transitioned to their ‘true gender’ participating in competitive sport.
