Government Commits to Transgender Equality
In its paper ‘Government for National Recovery 2011-2016’, Ireland’s new coalition government announced its support for transgender equality:
“We will ensure that trans-gender people will have legal recognition and extend the protections of the equality legislation to them.”
The landmark statement occurs in the midst of the Government’s section on Equality, which opens: “Equality is at the heart of what it means to be a citizen in our democracy. This Government believes that everyone has the right to be free from discrimination and that we all benefit from living in a more equal society.”
The section goes on to pledge: “We will require all public bodies to take due note of equality and human rights in carrying out their functions.”
On 3 March 2011, TENI wrote to all 166 newly-elected TDs and policy-makers, urging them to:
- Enact Gender Recognition Legislation
- Extend Equality Legislation
- Expand Health Services
TENI warmly welcomes the Government’s unequivocal commitment to transgender equality and enacting gender recognition legislation.
