Celebrating IDAHOT: Dublin Launch of 'Touching the Surface' a Huge Success!
TENI launched the landmark publication, 'Touching the Surface: Trans Voices in Ireland' last night in Wood Quay Civic Offices, Dublin. The event drew over 150 people and was launched by the Deputy Lord Mayor, Cllr. Maria Parodi.
“It was a powerful evening! Contributors to the book gave us such a medley of delights, from poetry to political commentary,” said TENI Communications Officer Orlaith O'Sullivan. “We had a fantastic turnout from TENI's friends and allies, and there was tremendous goodwill and support, which literally had us up on our feet dancing! It was a real celebration, and we ended the evening feeling buoyed by hope for a more inclusive future.”
The launch was part of Dublin City Council's Social Inclusion week and also marked the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (17 May).
“This launch was such a huge success in raising awareness and visibility of trans people in Ireland,” said TENI Director Broden Giambrone. “There is no doubt in my mind that we made a little bit of trans history last night. Our sincere thanks goes out to all the speakers, contributors, volunteers and everyone who came out to support and celebrate trans voices.”
There will be a second launch in Cork City on Saturday 19 May at Shine, 17 Washington Street, Cork City. The Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Tony Fitzgerald will officiate at the launch (Facebook page here).
'Touching the Surface' is a landmark publication celebrating trans experiences from across Ireland. The collection contains prose, poetry, artwork and photographs from more than forty contributors.
The project was made possible through generous funding from LGBT Communities Fund from The Community Foundation for Ireland and the Social Inclusion Unit of Dublin City Council.
