GRAG Report to be Published
The report of the Gender Recognition Advisory Group - formed by the government last year to propose recommendations on gender recognition legislation - will be published on Thursday 14 July at 11am. The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, TD, will host the publication at Buswells Hotel in Dublin. The report has been presented to Cabinet.
“TENI welcomes the publication of the long-awaited report,” said TENI Director Mr Broden Giambrone. “This is a vital moment for trans rights in Ireland.”
A recent report by the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights highlighted Ireland as one of the remaining countries in the European Union that has no provision for gender recognition legislation, describing legal recognition of preferred gender as ‘crucial’. Among the key recommendations made by the report was the abolishing of sterilisation and other compulsory medical treatment as necessary requirements for the legal recognition of a trans person’s preferred gender.
The Commissioner for Human Right's report also encouraged the de-coupling of marriage from gender recognition by removing the requirement of being unmarried or divorced as a necessary condition for the legal recognition of preferred gender.
“These best-practice recommendations offer Ireland a superb opportunity to develop progressive and inclusive gender recognition legislation and lead Europe in this area,” continued Mr Giambrone. "We eagerly await the publication of the GRAG's findings, and hope that tomorrow will be a landmark day for human rights in Ireland."
