Projects

This page is has been created to inform our members and others about the current projects TENI is engaged in.

Gender-Based Violence Project

COSC, the National Office for the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence, provided grant funding to produce a leaflet and poster campaign targeted at the GardaĆ, highlighting the issues of violence and discrimination faced by many trans people. The goal is to inform about gender diversity - that there are many different gender identities and expressions; question stereotypes - NOT all trans people are MTF transwomen and NOT all trans people will, or want to, transition; and highlight that we are all different people, but entitled to the same rights and respect granted to all members of Irish society. This project involves liaising with the police, engaging in positive discussions that promote awareness of trans issues and seeks to establish guidelines for the GardaĆ when dealing with trans people as victims or perpetrators of crime.

Transphobia and Hate Crime Reporting Research Project

A research project, funded by ILGA-Europe Human Rights Violations Documentation Fund, reviewing Irish literature, policy and documentation on the issues of transphobia and hate crimes against trans people. It will be a base-line measurement assessing what methods, if any, have been used to document and monitor transphobic incidences in Ireland and looks to European models of policy and best practice in hate crime documentation to provide recommendations to inform Irish policy proposals.

TD Awareness Raising Campaign

Ireland is in contravention of the European Convention on Human Rights in not recognising the legal status and rights of transgender people. The government is appealing the first ever Declaration of Incompatibility in Irish law issued by the High Court in the Dr. Lydia Foy case. Ireland is directly violating its obligations under European law to ensure our human rights. Gender recognition for transgender people will only be achieved if we are prepared to ask for it. As a member of TENI, we are asking you to write a letter or go directly to your local TD and tell them that our rights are being infringed through the denial of access to legal gender recognition. Please go to the Oireachtas website and find contact details of your local TD and take action. Send a letter or email, make a phone call or visit in person. We must strive to ensure that ALL of our elected representatives are contacted and made aware of this issue.
